Abstract:

Digitalization has been part of our daily activities for the last years and will undoubtedly be essential in future technology. Digital tools have been implemented in the Oil and Gas Industry from exploration to production, including surface and subsurface applications. Digital Rock Analysis (DRA) workflow combines the most advanced X–ray computed microtomography (μCT) 3D imaging methods and modeling with the state-of-the-art in multi-scale fluid flow numerical simulations. The application of DRA properly integrated with physical measurements improves considerably the results, reducing time and costs. Digital image workflows support routine and special core analysis to improve reservoir characterization. Downscaling based on multi-resolution computed tomography core scan allows to capture the porous structure of the rock. High-performance simulations are used to compute digital multiphase flow, electrical and elastic properties in reduced time. Finally, robust upscaling techniques are used to integrate pore-plug-core scales generating valuable reservoir characterization. Optimized time, resources and information are key for planning asset development. Through a multiscale approach, DRA strengthens conventional core analysis by providing critical datasets to enhance the generation of dynamic models. We oversee the application of this technology for improved real-time operation decision-making, creating a new market breakpoint.

Bios:

Santiago Drexler holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), a MS from the University of Oklahoma (USA) and a PhD from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), where he was also a guest professor in Petroleum Engineering for 6.5 years. He started his career in the Oil Industry in 2012 in Chemical EOR projects with an operator in mature & Pre-salt fields in Brazil. He moved on to reservoir engineering and petrophysics through the design and implementation of a pioneer laboratory for SCAL, rock-fluid and fluid-fluid evaluation to support Pre-salt characterization for field development and EOR. He is currently a Principal Engineer and Development Team Leader with Halliburton, integrating digital core analysis and SCAL to reservoir evaluation to support dynamic modelling in a variety of challenging plays across the world.

Milena Siqueira is PhD in Applied Nuclear Physics. She was born in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, and current is Technology Team lead for Wireline &Perforating at Halliburton, responsible to implement the R&D portfolio for well intervention and digital rock solutions in Brazil.
